TGV vs SHINKANSEN

An exterior view of a moving landscape, or what Louis Lumière once described as an “animated photographic view”. Did the train invent framing and sideways tracking?

According to the documentary The Eye, the Brush and the Cinematograph by Stefan Cornic, the first train journeys were experienced as a kind of pre cinematic experience, long before the invention of film language.

This photographic series explores that idea through two iconic high speed rail systems: the Eurostar and Japan’s Shinkansen. Images captured on board, on platforms, and along the tracks observe how travel, speed and landscape shape the act of seeing.

Between Paris and Japan, the train becomes both subject and viewpoint. Windows frame passing worlds, reflections blur interior and exterior, and passengers inhabit a moving stage where photography, travel and cinema quietly meet.
